Theory Exam Tips MCPS/FCPS

1) Accept the Bitter Fact

You have studied Rook's enough, It's time to put the book down and focus on solving MCQs. I know its a bitter pill to swallow but the sooner you accept it, the better. Your final exams tests your capability to grab key facts from the given scenario and make logical decisions in the limited time. Keep that in mind. Two months before exams start following these steps.

2) Study Smart!!

I can not emphasise this enough. It does not matter in the end how long you study if you keep learning the wrong things. Rooks is a Reference book. You decide what you take from it. Not every single detail is important as far as exam and clinical practice is concerned. This book encompasses all knowledge for exams, clinics, research and controversies. Bear that in mind. What to take from it?

It really hard to answer. Its a skill you learn by

  • Seeing many patients and writing their management plan.
  • Describing  your patients
  • Practice questions.
  • Reading case reports
  • Join Study groups on social media

3) Do Maximum Practice Questions

Plan to solve maximum MCQs from Past Papers and International Pool. Following are good resources

  • Boardvitals MCQs
  • MRCP Dermatology Practice Questions
  • PAST FCPS/MCPS Papers
  • MasterPass
  • ETAS

4) Hardly any one liners..

MCQS in CPSP papers are very International standards and you hardly find one liners. Logical deduction and rule out differentials is the key to success.

5) Time is of the essence

You have to make the habit of solving MCQs fast. Time is limited. Reading Rook's over and over will not help you but solving maximum pool will.

6) Make your own Pre-Exam Notes

Get a notebook/ laptop and whatever question you solve, make a one liner note in your notebook. Open up textbook for clarity, make note in easy shortest sentence. I prefer typing on laptop so your text is easily searchable. Start this practice early and before Exams you will have lots of high yield points and hardcore concepts that are most likely asked in exams. Revise only these before exams.

7) Images make powerful memory

Add Images to your notes. Do revision from your own notes and images over and over, if needed make any changes in your original notes rather than going to different source.

8) Practice Practice Practice....

Do multiple drills of MCQ solving, Time yourself and try to solve from different topics, so your mind gets in a habit of quick recall. Aim for solving ten thousand MCQs from different sources. after the one thousand mark you will see significant repetition. With time your skill and speed will significantly increase.

9) Bonus Tip

I am sharing my notes for MCQs, so you get the idea. Add these to your own notes
